The first woman in the world to have flown in space, Valentina Vladimirovna Tereshkova was born on 6th march 1937 in the village of maslennikovo in tutayevsky district, yaroslavi oblast in central Russia. Her parents had migrated from Belarus. Before her recruitment as a cosmonaut, Tereshkova was a textile factory assembly worker and an amateur skydiver. Tereshkova also became a well known representative of the soviet union abroad. She was made a member of the world peace council 1966.
